All this time, we thought it was all about the money.
Maybe Le’Veon Bell just wanted out of Pittsburgh?
Why else would Bell turn down a $70 million contract before the 2018 season? Why else sit out all 16 games, forfeiting $14.5 million in guaranteed salary?
Any why else accept a lesser deal from the New York Jets?
Bell took a calculated risk by preserving his health for free agency, and it all but guaranteed a change of address.
There were lavish contract demands in the meantime (some of which didn’t age well), and it’s likely the All-Pro overestimated his worth on the open market a bit.
But Antonio Brown muscled his way out of the organization, too.
With the breakdown of Bell’s four-year, $52.5 million pact with the Jets released today, you can see the guaranteed money falls well short of Pittsburgh’s best offer.
So the 27-year-old Bell is excited about joining the Jets — and leaving the Steelers — even if an old tweet will live in infamy.
